"The Author-Editor Clinic gave me what no friend, colleague or writing group has ever done: a highly detailed and substantive critique of every aspect of a novel-in-progress, including thematic elements, characters, structure, plot, and pacing. The reality of publishing today is that agents and editors want to see novels that are ready for publication; they are less inclined than in years past to help new writers develop their work. The Author-Editor Clinic is a great resource, and I highly recommend it."
—Allison Green, Author, Half-Moon Scar
  • Have a long manuscript you'd like to finish or polish?
  • Feel you need more professional help than your writing class or writers' group can offer?
  • Wonder how to find an experienced editor at a reasonable cost?

The Author-Editor Clinic exists to provide effective and reasonably priced editing for your book project. We believe in working with you to shape your manuscript into its best possible form. Thoughtful, respectful communication is at the core of our philosophy, and we strive to make the editing experience positive and encouraging. Our editing services have been used by satisfied authors of literary and commercial fiction, memoirs and travel tales, as well as other works of nonfiction. We provide substantial critiques that can help take your book project to the next level.

We work with authors in several different ways.

  • Several times a year, a group of editors meet in a six-week-long editorial session supervised by the Clinic's director, Barbara Sjoholm. For this, our most reasonably priced option, we accept a small number of manuscripts. Each manuscript is edited by a single editor, in the context of our weekly discussions about editing issues. For more on this option, including upcoming dates, click here.

  • We also now accept selected manuscripts year-round in our new Manuscript Review Service, which connects authors with trained freelance editors affiliated with the Clinic. If you'd like to pay a one-time fee for a thorough read and critique of your manuscript but have the convenience of a response that meets your schedule, please click here.
  • You may also wish to work individually with a freelance editor, especially if your manuscript is over 120,000 words or is still under development (for instance, is only partly written, with outlines and notes). Editors affiliated with the Clinic have worked closely with the director, Barbara Sjoholm, and have skilled backgrounds in various forms of editing and writing. Please click here for a list of referrals and to contact the editors directly.

The Author-Editor Clinic's editing services have been used by new and established writers around the Pacific Northwest and all across the country. To see comments by authors who've used the service, click here.

The Author-Editor Clinic also provides quality advanced training for editors interested in the structural and developmental editing of long manuscripts. We offer seminars, mentoring, and other forms of education for qualified editors. If you are an editor, click here.
